Course Description:
This awareness-level course provides workers with a foundational understanding of liquid ammonia CalOSHA & California Fire Code regulations, chemical properties, and identification of hazards. Liquid Ammonia is commonly encountered in agriculture, refrigeration, and industrial settings. Students will learn how to identify ammonia through physical properties, placards, markings, and sensory indicators. This course emphasizes safe handling practices and introducing personal protective equipment. The focus is on recognition, safety, and proper initial response actions, without engaging in offensive mitigation. It focuses on more defensive actions such as isolating, denying entry by preventing additional exposures, and making proper notifications. In addition, the course provides a general understanding of overall health & safety and environmental risks.
Upon completion, workers will be able to recognize liquid ammonia and its common containers, identify hazards, and interpret placards and labels. Workers will be able to describe health effects and exposure symptoms, demonstrate protective actions, a understand the role of the awareness-level worker. Workers will NOT take direct action to stop leaks or control releases, only recognize hazards and initiate emergency response procedures. The goal is to recognize the hazard, isolate the area, and call for help without intervention.
