Course Description

This 8-hour elevating work platform course provides operator safety training for the Genie AWP vertical personnel lift. Training addresses applicable Cal/OSHA requirements, Genie operating and safety rules, equipment controls, pre-operation inspection, function testing, setup, stability, battery safety, and safe operation.

  • Employees who operate or use Genie AWP vertical personnel lifts.

Course Objectives

  • Recognize hazards associated with Genie AWP operation.
  • Identify and use the Genie AWP ground and platform controls.
  • Perform the pre-operation inspection and required function tests.
  • Understand proper setup, leveling, and outrigger requirements.
  • Follow the safety rules and operating limitations presented in the Genie AWP training program.

Course Content

Regulations & Safety Rules

  • Applicable Federal OSHA and Cal/OSHA concepts presented in the program.
  • Cal/OSHA elevating work platform requirements.
  • Manufacturer operating instructions and Genie AWP safety rules.

Tip-Over & Stability Hazards

  • Leveling the machine before raising the platform.
  • Proper installation and use of all four outriggers and leveling jacks.
  • Not adjusting or removing outriggers while the platform is occupied or raised.
  • Not moving the machine while the platform is raised.
  • Wind limitations and other stability precautions presented in the program.
  • Prohibitions on pushing or pulling against outside objects and placing ladders or scaffolds in or against the machine.

Electrical, Collision & Other Hazards

  • Electrical hazards and required clearance.
  • Overhead obstructions and work-area hazards.
  • Crushing and collision hazards.
  • Damaged-machine, improper-use, burn, explosion, and battery lifting hazards.

Genie AWP Controls

  • Ground controls, including emergency stop, key switch, outrigger interlock display lights, battery indicators, power light, and auxiliary platform lowering.
  • Platform controls, including emergency stop, control activate button, and up/down switch.

Pre-Operation Inspection & Maintenance Checks

  • Operator, safety, and responsibilities manuals and required decals.
  • Battery fluid leaks and fluid level.
  • Hydraulic oil leaks and proper oil level.
  • Lifting chains, idler wheels, fasteners, mast columns, counterweight, outriggers, leveling jacks, footpads, and glide pads.
  • Machine damage, corrosion, welds, structural components, battery terminals, cables, fasteners, and pins.
  • Hydraulic oil level check presented in the program.

Function Tests & Safe Operation

  • Function testing before the machine is placed into service.
  • Tagging and removing a malfunctioning machine from service.
  • Pre-operation inspection and function testing after repairs before returning the machine to service.
  • Platform raising/lowering, emergency stop, auxiliary lowering, setup, and safe-use procedures presented in the program.

Battery Safety

  • Battery acid and explosive-gas hazards.
  • Protective clothing and eye protection.
  • Keeping sparks, flames, and lighted tobacco away from batteries.
  • Charging batteries in a well-ventilated area.

Equipment Requirements

  • A Genie AWP vertical personnel lift must be provided for the hands-on portion of the training. The equipment must be in good working order, safe to operate, and available for the practical training and evaluation.

Evaluation & Certification

Participants complete the course evaluation activities included with the Genie AWP training program.

Key Training Note

Operators must follow the Genie operator’s manual and the operating limitations for the specific Genie AWP model used.
