Course Description

This 8-hour course provides operator safety training for aerial devices covered in the NATEC training program, including telescopic/straight boom, articulating boom, and bucket truck/vehicle-mounted aerial devices. The course addresses safe inspection, setup, operation, hazard recognition, fall protection, electrical hazards, equipment stability, and applicable equipment-specific operating considerations presented in the course.

Course Topics

  • Applicable Cal/OSHA and Federal OSHA requirements for aerial devices
  • Aerial-device types, including telescopic/straight boom, articulating boom, and bucket-truck equipment
  • Pre-use inspection, controls, safety devices, manuals, markings, and equipment condition
  • Work-area hazards and safe equipment setup
  • Stability, center of gravity, grade/slope limitations, and rated capacities
  • Outrigger, braking, wheel-chock, and supporting-surface requirements
  • Overhead electrical-line hazards and required clearances
  • Fall-protection requirements and proper use while operating an aerial device
  • Lower/ground controls, emergency controls, and emergency-lowering procedures
  • Safe boom operation, positioning, shutdown, stowing, and elevated-travel restrictions
  • Material-handler attachments, load charts, and jib/winch operation where applicable
  • Crane hand signals where applicable to the operation covered in the course

Training Method

Training includes classroom instruction using the NATEC Aerial Lift Operator Safety Training program, a written final examination, and a hands-on operator practical evaluation using the applicable equipment.

Equipment / Site Requirements

  • Applicable aerial lift/aerial device must be available for the hands-on portion of training.
  • Equipment must be in good working order and suitable for the practical evaluation.
  • Manufacturer operating information and required equipment markings must be available on the equipment as applicable.
  • The practical training area must allow the operator to demonstrate the inspection, setup, controls, and operating tasks covered in the course.

Course Completion

Course completion is based on participation in the training, completion of the written final examination, and successful demonstration of the required skills during the final practical evaluation.
